Community Services Industry Portable Long Service Leave Scheme to Start 1 January 2021

Queensland’s portable long service leave (PLSL) scheme for the community services industry will commence on 1 January 2021.

Legislation to create the PLSL scheme was passed by the Queensland Parliament on 17 June 2020 (Community Services Industry (Portable Long Service Leave) Act 2020) but the operative date for the scheme has only just been confirmed. It was initially intended that the scheme would commence on 1 July 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back its implementation.

The PLSL scheme will affect for-profit and not-for-profit non-government organisations providing services to communities. An estimated 44,495 employees will be eligible for the PLSL scheme which will be funded by a levy paid by employers calculated at 1.35% of an employee’s ordinary wages. The PLSL scheme will be administered by the existing PLSL Authority, QLeave.

Employers in the sector should register with QLeave to begin preparing for the PLSL scheme.
