Employers should take note that, in Queensland, all FOUR days across the fast-approaching Easter weekend are gazetted public holidays. This means that, under the Modern Awards, all work performed on Good Friday, the day after Good Friday (Easter Saturday), Easter Sunday and Easter Monday will attract the designated public holiday penalty. In most instances, this penalty will be double time and a half which, in the case of casuals, will often be payable in addition to the casual loading. Workplace agreements may contain alternative obligations with respect to work performed on public holidays.
Permanent (full-time and part-time) employees who are not required to work because of a public holiday will be entitled to be absent without loss of pay for the day – this is the case regardless of whether an employee is captured by a Modern Award, Enterprise Agreement or they are award-free. A small number of Modern Awards also entitle full-time employees to the benefit of a public holiday falling on a rostered day off.
ES clients who are unsure of their employees’ entitlements with respect to public holidays should contact the ES advice line on (07) 3220 3500 for assistance or try live chat (ideal for those quick queries). A number of useful fact sheets relating to public holidays are also accessible to ES clients via your online account.
